July 2004 Winners

Frozentoast is the portfolio of designer Andrew Harwood. Nice vectorized graphics with a few scattered leaves in the background and a very simple and boxy layout. You almost expect the "flash-like" main content box to resize from section to section.

Unlike most people I usually like a centered popup for showcasing different projects, but I wish Andrew could make Frozentoast more accessible with popups and rollovers that work without JavaScript.

Forget the slightly low quality header photographs and the fact I don't know the language. This site has some real edge, and really well organised content.

Google Translator says that this site is aimed at promoting youth initiatives, and its dirty, street look seems to fit well with this. However, probably the best thing about this site is its layout. Easy to understand navigation, chunking of information, good division between areas, and the text resizes well (in Firefox) while retaining the grungy effects.

Clean and simple and not a drop-shadow in sight; pseudoroom reminds me a lot of the layout of certain design communities, but without feeling cluttered. The centered two-column layout functions very well to provide the user with an almost "frames-like" experience (similar to another WSA winner -- Twinsparc). No complaints. From the producers of GUI Galaxy.

Thankfully, the monthly judging panel is totally independent, so hopefully no calls of bias can be levelled at Rapha's win in July. :o]

The Message team just edged out Pseudoroom's portfolio because of its rich content, commercial focus, and distinctive use of the colour pink. Their win shows that fantastic art direction isn't negated by Standards-compliance.

..and now for something completely different.
Gedimo is a beautiful and open site that has a very original and unusual layout. It does use valid code and a healthy separation of content and style, but, in a wider sense, you could argue that it doesn't follow "the spirit" of web standards. However, by focusing on the refreshing uniqueness alone, Gedimo scores high.

That said, these are some of the problems:
Lack of accessibility, JavaScript required to use links, overlapping content on 800x600 that makes some links unclickable, popup windows show scrollbars in FireFox, mouseover effects not visible in some browsers.
Perhaps a version 6 can rectify these problems?
