Malarkey's awards are like buses. You wait for ages, then two come along at once ;). And this one makes me wish I'd paid attention in German classes.

A muted colour palette, interesting Flash menu and an unconventional layout combine to make a site which feels well crafted. A quick look under the hood (and the nifty PHP style-sheet writing) leaves you feeling good too.

No more to say except this one is a must see!

"And this one makes me wish I'd paid attention in German classes."

The site is not that fascinating if you understand the content...
Well, I don't like how the whole thing flickers when you click a link, and some of the color schemes are not as good as the one on the home page. However, for a german site it's very good.

wow, this is good stuff.

I dont understand one word of it but it looks great. I like the "voting" buttons (the red X thing). The menu and the whole is design is very fresh.

Nice little flash touches, and great treatment of photography. Only thing I'd do is allow the ability to turn the heartbeat off. (Unless I don't see it in the German, of course)..but I get it after about, oh, 3 beats. Or it could become slower and slower, and finally end.

@Greg: From my point of view, most german web designers know nothing of how to use xhtml and css.

@Julian:

German boy band by German web outfit http://www.bitdesign.de/

AND

http://zehelein.de/ recently redesigned Microsoft Germany to follow web standards (http://www.windows.de/Homepage.Windows)

I would be less specific anyway. I prefer "...most web designers know nothing of how to use xhtml and css..."

;)

I can't stand it when I can't turn off the sound on a web page. There is no sound Off button (not even in German). As a general fact I don't see when it is even useful to have sound on a web page.
I usually listen to music while surfing and very open I open a page in the background. When you know what the volume difference can be between a generic MP3 and most Flash sounds, you're in for nasty experience with this web site.
I am still undecided as to how acceptable it is to use JavaScript to embed Flash.

I also don't like the use of DLs for the poll: it's not relevant.
What's more it counted my vote wrong because I clicked on a box to see how it would react... and it counted this as my response. No submit, no control... I don't think they're gonna have reliable statistics.

The design is cool and they show good knowledge of XHTML and CSS but to me the experience was ruined from the start, sorry.
