The Paumanok Review

Saturday June 4th, 2005

I'd always associated feathered black and white images with bad wedding montages, but the designer of The Paumanok Review has used it perfectly to lay the setting for the fictional writing contained on this site.

The stark coldness of the scene -- paired with paper textures -- make it the perfect compliment to the prose and poetry that is the focus of this site and puts me in mind of the writings of some emigre Russian author.

The design perfectly compliments the wonderful content of the site. It's simple, non-obstrusive and elegant, and sets the "mood" for a refreshing read.

The only bad thing is that it doesn't validate :P

There was a typo on the link tag. It validates now.

Everytime I see a site like this I want to redesign. Very simple.

For as beautiful a site as it is, it completely misses in that it has a print stylesheet that does not do much. This type of publication is the type that readers will probably print, and what they get isn't very nice.

Very beautifully designed, although I would of like to of seen some png transparency used with text for the nav instead of images.

I must object to two of the comments above. Firstly, I don't see why png's would be a win, especially when Internet Explorer's support is so dicey. Sure, there are workarounds, but that's a lot of work when you could just use a standard jpg and have it work without hacks.

Secondly, I think the print css comment is misguided. Paumanok provides a pdf every issue that is a complete redesign to align for print. That's what pdf's are made for. Furthermore, Paumanok is available as a printed copy, if one so desires.

It's also worth noting that this site is done by a single person in her spare time for no money. I don't see such an individual having time for a web site, a pdf, _and_ a print css file, nor for debugging internet explorer png issues.
