WSA Winner
Monday March 1st, 2004
The second month of the Web Standards Awards, and controversy abounds. The monthly judges were evenly split into two camps, requiring us to invoke our emergency tie breaking procedures. So, after the dust of two rounds of thumb wrestling had settled, only one site stood victorious: jasonsantamaria.com. Condolences go to Adaptive Path for a close second; you guys should already know how good you are.
But the controversy hasn't just been on the field. Thanks to all the visitors to WSA who post their comments about each of the sites awarded. Not everyone agrees all the time, but it's through this sort of discussion that sites truly get rewarded, and the Web Standards community benefits in the process.
“What I really like about his site is not just its warm palette, but its simplicity — the site architecture and organisation of the content draws you in. The depth of content could be overwhelming but he really does a great job in presenting his projects.”
Carole Guevin
“I LOVE this design. The colors, distressed look, and general construction all work for me. There is a slight misalignment in IE5/Mac, but nothing to lose major sleep over.”
Eric A. Meyer
Original review:
Excellent blog and personal portfolio by Jason Santa Maria. The site has warm, yet muted, colors that attract your attention to the content. Or perhaps it's the paper back spine theme that subconsciously makes you want to read the posts?

This is very well deserved - one of my favourite site designs. Everything about it just works, and I'm very jealous!

dudes (and dudettes), this site looks great, like an old comfortable novel. I really like it, and I wonder how he he created the smooth rips... looks nice... looks REAL nice... if you know what I mean.
And if you don't: I think it deserves the award

Thanks for all of the kinds words! The site's visuals were inspired by my love of old books and their typography. I have a pretty decent collection of old pulp novels (beautifully aged over time) that helped with some of the tears and scuffs... as well as an ordinary old photoshop brush. Cheers!

Yet another site that doesn't work well on a MAC running OS 9 ... will they ever learn?

I tested pretty extensively on everything I could find, including OS 9. Perhaps you could tell me the problem you are having and, not the OS, but the particular browser you are using...before you assume I am excluding you on purpose. :) Thanks!

Who is still using Mac OS 9? All I can think of are education users, and maybe businesses....

FAO Jason Santa Maria
Try looking at the primary navigation on a MAC running OS 9 using IE 5.0 ... you not only experience rectangles of colour over navigation but on rolling over other areas the navigation disappears???
Hope this helps

Where is this site hosted? It takes forever to load... 3+ minutes, and still not loaded...

Joe, could there be a denial-of-service attack against a dns server going on right now? I have noticed quite a few sites not responding lately. Hopefully Jason's site is up soon again.
Michiel, I have not noticed the problem that you're describing and I can't double check at the moment. Could you tell me what browser/platform you're using?
Wild guess: IE5 on OS9? :)

Well, I really have no problems at all with this site being picked for the award.
Judging by the comments on the first Adaptive Path award I'd say you avoided more nasty comments about back scratching by picking this one too.
This is a very nice site indeed and it deserves all the praise it can get.
Congrats Jason!

Love the site! I noticed the floating problem on IE 6, Win2K when my resolution is set at 800x600.

Yeah, I am still trying to crack that one. Not that I should look to IE to start making sense, but damn I hate that browser sometimes. I am a happy Mac user, but forced into PC servitude at work.

Web Standards and XHTML/CSS are all pretty new to me, I've been living ignorantly and blissfully for quite some time but I find it all very fascinating. Which browser would you, Jason (or anyone else) consider to be the best?

Well, Aaron, if you are a Mac user, Safari would be best. Other wise, search for Firefox, which is a good standards compliant browser. IE is ewy (that rhymes, right?)
SITE NOTE: Is there a new sunset picture at the top of the Web Standards Awards pages?

I am on a mac at home and a pc at work. I use safari on my mac, though sometimes it is buggy with certain code, in which case I use Firefox. Firefox rocks my shitty PC. Never look back.

J-Dawg, I suggested my PC friend change from IE to Firefox.. he has fallen in love with it. It is the best alternative to Safari, in my opinion... now, only if he could figure out how to make it his default's browser.
Johan, are you saying that the image's crop area will be different every day, or this is just something like "hey, let's change it." "yeah, that would be cool." "No, two diet cokes." "Watching your figure?" "Yeah, shut up, just change the image," "But, Diet Coke?" "Yeah, the taste is almost the same," "But, why?" "Dude, I told you, my grandma has made me promise I would drink it," "Whatever."
"Dude, you see Slashdot today?" "Which one?" "The thing about about the..." "Oh, yeah, dude, I saw that." "Yeah, that was cool." "Oh, 'Friends' is on."
